Wine of the Week #14
Domain Drouhin Pinot Noir Lourene 2002
According to them: “Everything I love about the 2002 vintage is evident in Laurène. The flavors are all extraordinary in their richness, and neither rough nor heavy. The architecture of the wine is a marvel of harmony with very fine and noble tannins bringing a silky roundness to the wine - what we call the “gras” in Burgundy. The acidity adds a bit of energy to the wine, which carries deep black fruit and black cherries, and other intense flavors. The well balanced structure will enable the wine to age and improve remarkably through the years. Please decant for 30 minutes to enjoy the wine in its youth, or cellar for increased nuances from now until 2013 and probably much longer.”
According to me: Domaine Drouhin is a family winery with their roots in French Burgandy wines and are located in the Red Hills near Dundee, Oregon. These guys have a great story to tell, and are producing some really excellent wines. This pinot was pretty much the best wine I have ever tasted. It was interestingly complex and a fine compliment to a dinner at Wild Ginger. Next trip down to the Williamette Valley will include a stop here for sure.
I’m heading out to Napa tomorrow morning for a day of running through vineyards in the wine country. Pictures next week.
