Sonics, so long
Every fall, as the NBA jumps into the sports scene on the heels of another ho-hum World Series, I ask “who cares?”
For whatever reason, the NBA just doesn’t much interest me anymore. Actually, I don’t think it has since the Celtics were good. Here is why:
- Individual games don’t matter. They play 82 games, and between opening night and March, there is not much on the line night in and night out.
- The flow of the game is not very exciting. There is not enough running, and not enough ball movement. There’s far too much one on one.
- My teams don’t matter: Boston and Seattle can’t seem to turn the corner to compete year in and year out.
- Gonzaga basketball is all the hoops I can handle. Between watching the zags, reading about the zags, and talking about the zags, I just don’t have the time for anymore basketball.
Tonight, the Seattle Super Sonics opened up their final season in Seattle, and I find myself pretty neutral on the whole issue with Clay Bennett and his group from Oklahoma. If I enjoyed watching professional basketball, maybe I would have a stronger opinion on the Sonics leaving town.
Completely agree with you. The NBA sucks.
I also think one of the biggest problems in the NBA is that there is so much trading. In the 80’s and 90’s you would have the same core group of guys on the same team that you could really rally around. The team’s then had their own unique personality (The Bad Boys in Detroit, Showtime in LA, Celtic Pride in Boston).
Now players move around so much that its hard to get behind any team.
