Ligety Split!
I’ve been waiting for a moment during the Torino Olympics to blog about, and I just finally watched it. Enough pair skating, enough talk of Bode, enough talk about Kwan, enough of Apallo, enough snowboarding… and tonight, finally a great Olympic performance by Ted Ligety of Park City, UT to win the mens alpine combined (the combined times from one downhill run and two slalom runs are added up).
I’m sure there have been other inspiring performances already, but this is the first one I’ve seen. Ligety is what is great about the Olympics, it’s why I continue to tune in. Just like that a new star is born, coming out of nowhere to win a gold medal while his teamates either struggled or were disqualified.
The Olympics are not about Bode and his Nike commercials, or figuring skating controversy’s or anything else that the networks manufacture to drive ratings. I’m an Olympic purist, and I’ll watch the Ligety’s or the world take on the world every night for the next week and a half.
